The Freshwater pearl looks very similar to the Akoya. However it is more irregular in shape and comes in different colours and sizes. China is one of the largest producer of freshwater pearls.

The pearl farm in Tennessee holds special historic value as it is the only freshwater pearl outside of Asia, founded by the late John Latendresse, it continues as a tourist attraction today.
